REVIEW: RUSS STEDMAN - "Blowing Chunks Of Theory" - 2012

RUSS STEDMAN
"Blowing Chunks Of Theory" CD album thing

Mostly? entirely? instrumental? Fun musical and sonic puns about music, like "Diamonds & Pears." "One Mile High" is slow and spacey, like a Prince song played at 20 BPM? This album is not like symphonic dubstep dirge digeridoo glitch-witch or anything out of left field, Russ is giving ya/me what ya/I want, which is great songs, great production, great performances, great fuckin' guitar tone that makes me wanna pick up a guitar myself, and drumming that sounds like a live drummer, except better. It ain't fuckin' rocket science. "Vitreous Humour" is another favorite, it's like rocked-out MIDI files of a Marilion song or something. Hah. "Eat The Sun" contains some symphonic elements, don't get me wrong, some cool phrasing, fiddly bits, cool shit to go around. Also, "A Tin Teardrop" which is bulbous, also tapered? No, but it does sound like a fitting tribute to Dr. Beefheart & His Electric Teeth. "Insomnia," god DAMN those drums are cool! "Try Eating That (In Stereo)" and "Leaping Stink Snow" are an humorous pair of homages maybe to the "Zoot Allures" era, and to Frank's Synclavier years respectively. Or I could be totally wrong, fuck if I know. "Stale Trident" brings the proceedings to a close, in grand, lighters in the air, fog machine, laser finale fashion. Get it now, stop reading this. Shut up.

INTERVIEW - Russ Stedman Opens Up About KISS

Music From The Stedman
THIS WILL BE A GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR ME TO ASK YOU ABOUT YOUR ALL-KISS COVER ALBUM, "MUSIC FROM THE STEDMAN." IS IT AN OFFICIAL RELEASE? WHEN DID IT COME OUT? YOU REALLY COVERED A LOT OF GROUND WITH THAT CD, TONS OF SONGS FROM EVERY ERA.
No, it's not an official release. I pretty much made it to show off to you. There were three copies made. One to you, one to Mike Myers, who played drums on a lot of the songs, and one to my good buddy Evan Peta. Maybe I should upload it to archive.org, but I would never consider it an official release. There are recordings on it spanning 1986-2006. My favorite is the Reggae version of "Naked City" from UNMASKED.

CD REVIEW: Russ Stedman – Cherry Creek, 2011

RUSS STEDMAN
Cherry Creek CD, 2011
http://www.russstedman.com
The winter of 2010/2011 was a bitch for some of us. After spending a night in a mental care institution, Russ came out and made a concept album about his experience. The tone of the songs is dark but not bleak. Sad, but not hopeless. “I’ve Given Up Again” opens with Gilmour-esque acoustic strumming. “I’m Only Happy When I Cry” picks up the pace, somewhat, and deploys a stabbing line of synth octaves. I like the frantic vibe of “Short-Term Disability”. The production job is impressive, as usual. Note-perfect, clean as a bell. What? “I’m a spoiled little bitch and I don’t want to work anymore,” goes this one, titled “I Don’t Wanna Work Anymore.” “And I Think” is funky and fun, like Bjorn, John and John. “When Will The Drugs Take Effect?” is a moody, eight minute epic that’s something like Jane’s Addiction meets New Order or something, and the drumming is rad. “Cherry Creek” is the book-end, a companion piece to th opening song, except it builds up into a whole big coda thing. Another damn fine release from Sted.

CD REVIEW - TEENAGE SLOTS – WE OUTLIVED REAGAN – CD 2011

Gorgeously rendered trips down memory lane. The beauty of modern technology is that you can go back and make everything sound as it was intended. The circa-1986 songs are energetic, melodic, tuneful, energy-up. This genre would be, I guess classic midwestern punk rock, if that’s not an oxymoron.“Ronald Reagan Is A Dick!” Don’t dance the poot. Righteous. “People On Drugs” gets one hell of a retrofit, with booty bass drums and autotune vocals. And there’s a whole current of anti-jock rhetoric, which amuses me to no end.
