SO......DID YOU MISS AUTOreverse?
I did for sure. It was a real eye-opener for me. I had no real idea what was going on in the underground scene. Didn't even know there was one, to be honest. AUTOreverse was always highly entertaining and provocative. Down in the main to your own personality...

John, thanks for answering a few questions. Let's start with that old chestnut, influences. Who are your biggest musical influences and why?
If you mean who do I think I want to sound like, that depends on when the release came out. My style has changed a couple of times since I started in 1986.

My earliest experiences with electronic music were Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze. I was crazy about anything with synthesizers in it.

Let's start by talking about your musical influences. Who are your biggest influences and why? Who were your early musical influences?
My primary musical influences are actually quite orthodox and considering the character of my electronica tend not to fall into the more predictable categories. This is also because a lot my work expresses a part of myself that I live with but not always from. I grew up with rock music and with rock music I remain, especially Paul Westerberg and Van Morrison. I adore The Beach Boys, The Who, The Stooges, early Bowie, The Smiths and Morrissey. I love cheesy country and trucking music, but also Blue Oyster Cult and The Beatles. However, I enjoy electronic music, usually ambient, and also primo American punk, such as Husker Du and Ramones.

HOW/WHERE/WHEN WAS OLD RECORDED?

Old was recorded when I was young, in various ways and places, from 1991 to 2003.  I was 18 when we recorded the two earliest songs on Chris [Reider]'s crappy second-hand 4 track. We were living with my parents at the time, in a claustrophobic little room. Life kind of sucked. But that was 20 years ago, and I don't remember much other than being incredibly self-conscious. When Chris had me improvise some singing over a track of his guitar playing, it was nearly impossible for me, and I was practically crying by the end. For the other early song, he and I sang into each other's mouths. I can only describe it as a kissing didgeridoo. The feeling of the vibrations is what I remember.

Let's talk about your musical influences. Who are your biggest influences and why? Who were your early musical influences?
I would have to list Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze's work of the 1970's as major influences and a lot of the progressive rock movement of those days. Jimi Hendrix was and is a big influence of my musical direction. That may not be obvious since he was a guitarist, but in the sense of a philosophy of music that is free, experimental and willing to take chances.

First of all, congratulations on your twenty-five year anniversary!  Twenty-five years is a long time to be doing anything, and I think you've been consistent and principled in pursuing realizations of your ideas, and deserve a lot of credit for that. Considering the occasion, I think it's probably appropriate to start with something retrospective. Why don't you tell me about the beginnings of your work with sound, and your first experiences with noise music?

Thanks for the kind words, Chris. I never think about things like that too much, although it's nice that you said them, coming from you it's quite a compliment! I do sometimes enjoy telling people how long I've been following my creative compulsions, it has it's own absurd impact.

Soccer Mom
EP, Download, 2011http://themightyaccelerator.bandcamp.com/
Funtime hard-rockin' rock band songs that are equal parts Midwestern punk and classic rock. Cowbell AND double-kick drumming in the same song. Kind of like a lighter Motorhead, something like that. "Shake It" opens with some heaviness, and the chorus reminds me of Tad. Stylistically it sounds like a mashup of Celtic Frost and Cinderella. This would make a nice 7" vinyl single, I'm sure Andy would've done that back in the day. "Mustache Foam" has dynamics and riffs for a semi-epic vibe. The production is nice but not so overpowering that I feel the need to mosh here, or stagedive off of my desk. Clean and professional in a good way, and fun.

These guys are a two-man noise riot. This piece is a 27 minutes worth of everything but music. You got several types of feedback, shrill samples and loops, all percolating in real time. This was created live. Certain types of people are drawn to the fringes, the hard, painful, line-in-the-sand that just makes it impossible to think or breathe. Too much of this will ruin your hearing and make you go blind, or maybe that's just me. Tag me out, I can't finish listening to the entire piece!

Repeat of the 3P. Weird ambience, screaming, reverbed to hell, sounds like the soundtrack to an old martian film, you know the one. "Large Cargo Ship" features a nice pile of samples and synthesizer splats and filters. "Search For Life Forms" is a a sparse take on robotic vocoder sounds. If this is a concept album, then we take this track as literally being a search for lifeforms. "Feeling Isolated On The Ship" is very similar, albeit with more bass in the vocoder.

Questions by Russ Stedman

Do you remember the first record you bought?
Very hard to say.  For singles, it could have been PINBALL WIZARD by the Who, or CRIMSON AND CLOVER by Tommy James and the Shondells.  Albums, it was probably GOD BLESS TINY TIM or the soundtrack to BONNIE AND CLYDE.  And I'd still buy those records.  Maybe not HAIR, though.

What bands from childhood have you NOT outgrown?
Probably the Beatles, Beach Boys, Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa. Jimi Hendrix, the Who, and Black Sabbath are still great but I played them way too much.  Jethro Tull and Deep Purple, I feel kind of silly now that I was SO into them.

Distorted bass guitar with clean drum programming and wandering keys on top. Plus vocal. "Take Care" is like a doom metal version of Soul Whirling Somewhere. And the bursts of bluesy guitar, I should not be enjoying this. The production can be summed up in two words: clean scuzz. Just like the early work of one of my favorite bands, Idaho. "Desert" is probably more like Queens Of The Stone Age, maybe? I enjoy the distorto-bass guitar-forward songwriting, vocals waaaaay off over there in the semi-background. The elements are familiar, but the picture is still pretty.

Progressive pop that is equal parts Yes and XTC, and no, I don't just mean ELO. In days of old, the "Shadowland" suite would merely have been known as side four of the new LP, a 17-minute theme in 5 parts. Bat Lenny is the King Crimson of the underground.

Massive prog-pop a la Mike Kenneally. I really enjoyed this one. "Gravity" opens with a single synthesizer note being filtered, kind of like any old song by the Human League. The song starts with a minimial drum beat, which is vamped on and reacted to by the other instruments, gradually building up into a groove like the Police. Primus meets E.L.O. This album is Marillionesque (I guess, Genesisesque would make more sense) in its scope. Repeated listenings required and rewarded.

Funky, mechanized grooves with miles of vocal loops. And funk. It's not Meat Beat Manifesto, but it's also not Perry Como, it's not a lot of things. Rhythm and melody. "All Refelctions End Here" is kind of like the bastard offspring of Gary Numan and early Nine Inch Nails, but better. Dark electronica. Have I said Skinny Puppy enough yet in this issue? In the early 1990s, we called this stuff 'industrial,' just meaning that it's dark and girls could dance to it. "Getting To Thou" gives those headphones a workout, all the elements jumping across the stereo spectrum. "It's A Dull Ride" is like drum & bass Pop Will Eat Itself. Monkey Brains Controlling Robot Arms is fun, funky and futile to ignore.

This CD is many types of metal, all at the same time. It's like a cross between My Dying Bride and Dead Can Dance. It's heavy and epic as a motherfucker. The production lends itself to headbanging and air-piano playing, or so I've been told. They have the male/female vocal thing down. The music of "In The Garden" sounds like Mercyful Fate crossed with Enya. It's the kind of unique plot twist that heavy metal needs to keep my attention. This album requires repeated listenings. Dream Theater meets Yanni? Wait, there is some saxophone, so maybe King Diamond plus Kenny G? Gothic jazz metal. Absolutely unique.

This CD compiles two previous releases of this Aussie posse, which includes Skot, Graz, amd Funkmeister G, I think. This is the cleanest and most polished avant garde noise free jam love I've heard in a while. Guitars, synths, drum machines and percussion, often with tons of echo and delay. The first nine tracks date from 2005, the last four were made in 2009, but the sound is coherent, cohesive, tight and professional as far as this type of thing usually goes. Meaning no huge volume spikes or anything else that will blow out your eardrums and/or speakers.

Oh, they're still drones, don't you worry. The first piece, "59 Hz," is 3:22 of what sounds like a ground hum. If you're expecting the guitar to plug in and this humming sound to go away, well, that doesn't happen. The noise is the star. And so on across the album. It's minimalistic and easy to talk over. Sounding alternately mechanical and organic, somehow.

The other one is more like smooth peanut butter. This one is crunchy. Now I'm hungry for Jif. Track one, "Clathrate Gun Hypothesis," sounds like an echoey underwater chamber, an alien life form beside some stalactites. Beside the white chickens. Oh wait, that's "Underwater Plume," I'm thinking of, which certainly does have a dewy vibe about it. "Apologies And Capitulations," sounds like a spaced-out Skinny Puppy breakdown. Several rhythmic elements operating independently, with that tension in the middle. This one is prettified chaos.

MASS DEBATE
Shun CD, 2011
Funky hiphop with large beats, fat basslines and an Aussie female MC/singer. The production is clear and thumpin'. The lyrics are all questioning governmental politics, racism and sexual politics. The more overtly sexual lyrics remind me of Lady Sovereign and Princess Superstar. The songs are sharp, snappy, quick in and out. I haven't heard a combination of political energy and pop music this smooth since Chumbawamba. Catchy pop rap that probably sounds great on the radio. Beats and production by Skot, Ernie and Meagan D, who also did the rhymes. Consolidated, remember them? "if you fuck up, just sit on your hands," nice hook.

John Gore and ambient cohort (get it?) Pixyblink bring the massive, exhaling whoosh on this one. Drones, arranged to decay, and not. There's a looping, high whooshy thing on opening piece "Affair De Coeur" that is quite something else. "Enfant Terrible" vacillates between quiet beauty and obnoxious aggression. Hellish soundtrack music. Or, soundtrackish hell music, take your pick. "Profanum Vulgus" is a cool title for one of the more understated pieces on this album. The quiet moments in general are terrifying and beautiful. "Mal De Mer," I like the way the synths are being tweaked and freaked in both speakers. "Laborare Est Orare" ends the album on quite a majestic note, literally. Awesome.

Is there anything you're feeling particularly mouthy about at the moment?
Lately I'm really obsessed with self-importance. I work in web development, and I seem to run into a lot of it in those circles, but it's kind of everywhere in society these days. So many people try so hard to look like something that not only they're not, but also that doesn't even make sense to be. The "creative class" is this myth that messes with your head. People spend money they don't have to try to look like a big wheel, when you're really just like, making silly fun websites that only make money by selling advertising under the false pretense that anybody pays any fucking attention to it. There's so much in our society and economy that's just absurd right now but that people take totally seriously.

Two long pieces, assembled by Sweden's Moljebka Pvlse and Italy's Cría Cuervos. Epic drone-ambients. "pa vndrande fot (Traveling By Foot)" fills the air nicely, with several twists and turns. It's cinematic in spots. "det ar aldrig for sent att vanda om (It's Never Too Late To Turn Back)" is a cleaner drone, reminding me of the music for the film 'Baraka', it feels profound, especially around the 20-minute mark, it sounds like a didjeridoo or its eastern equivalent, and a bit of feedback behind it. The last few minutes, with the reversed vocal sample loop is astounding. Gorgeous.

This is a brief introduction to the XoloStar Warrior, whose songs are in the Indietronic category on Soundclick. "Humantron" sounds like one a Buckethead instrumental. Which means it's funky, heavy and groovy and there's cool sound effects. And fun. "Zenorama" breaks out the vocal harmonizer and effects, along with the finger-jab drum machine sounds. Nice. Absurd, really. But great! "Para Talk" jumps in with a funky beat and more spaced-out spoken bits which go through every effect known to man. It's kind of hilarious and great at the same time. Finally, "Go Luup" continues with fragmented beats and rather deranged synth-stabs. Did he just say "shadow of the octopus"? Fun and awesome.

AMPTEXT + BASS / BLK W BEAR
"Nine Strings" / "Ten Outtakes & Demos"
Split CD, 2011Cohort Records
The first track by amptext + bass, "The Ghosts Of Silent Radios," sounds like about four different scores by John Cage played at the same time, which, for all I know, it might be. It sounds like a person playing a cello. There's a bit of messing-around with a handheld tape recorder (I assume), the air in the room. An old telephone in a box, or something. Hard core avant garde. "Bodyment 1" and "Bodyment 2"  continue with the same template, while the final two pieces are less tape-menacing and more live performances, if that description makes any sense. The cello playing is deft and scrapey, and the pieces include lots of silence.  Nice. The tracks by Blk w bear that follow are of the ambient noise ilk, or dark ambience. "Valve Languere [Vasoline Mix]" includes some interesting samples and loops which gradually fade across the inner ear thing. "Reade Lactid" sounds like some sampler abuse, of which I approve. "Salt Water Coughing" finishes up sounding like a pipe organ being devoured by a poltergeist. This deeply experimental split CD is available now. Handmade covers, the whole deal. John Gore really does this sh1t up.

Cool mixture of remixes, tributes, anti-mixes, whatever you wanna call it. Homage. Echoey loops, weird spoken passages and ambient room noises populate the frequency spectrum. Some are quite noisy, others more austere.

Here's a fun compilation that's all over the place, stylistically speaking. Chuck Hoffman's opening track is called "Feline & Toddler Vomitorium," it's a neat pile of Casio sampler loops. "Twenty Four" by Arcade is noisy and spaced-out dub, can it be? Yes, it can be. Large beats and fractious beats, and squelched synth stuff. I enjoy. Sampleman also takes a funk-friendly approach with "Small Pink & Black Alien". "Carbon" by Yenoc is another toe-tapper, with its upbeat synth burbles and vocoder vocals. The majority of the other tracks are quite noisy and abrasive., in a couple of cases straddling the line between noise and order. "Ophelia As A Cyborg" by Haru Yasumi is a noisy bit of FUNK, so it's what, IDM, is that the category? That is the noisiest funk track this side of my own work as FZZY PMPR. I like it a lot, though all of the pieces were interesting in their own ways.

ANIXAS
Zectec EP - Mudball Records
Jamendo download, 2011
It's an EP but it's more of a 3P. Three pieces, three minutes Each. "Zectec115" The first one features a decent drum loop with cool, staccato synth stuff happening, but there's also a couple of notes, like a drone but higher, almost like feedback or ground hum, which turn it from a playful bit of MIDI action to an act of sonic aggression. I'm not sure if it's intended, or not intended. "Zectec116" and "Zectec117" deploy similar drones and MIDI synth rubs, which are not as harsh. Kind of neat.

JAMIE HUTCHINGS
interview by Skot Schtikla
"The title comes from the where and how of the recording which had a very strong impact on the end result. It was recorded in a run-down shack out the front of a property in Avalon that was lent to us. Thus the bleeding, spilly, haphazard non-studio quality. Secondly, it was all recorded mostly live to an 8 track cassette recorder by my friend Chris Colquhoun" - comments from Jamie about his latest album 'Avalon Cassettes'

LESHITTER BLUT
Kill Everyone And Everything EP
Cherry Blossom Dog Records, 2011"Welcome to everything you thought you would never see before."
Crazy, keyboard noise... dude with spluttering, tourette's-level swearing and verbal misanthropy. "Intro" is a swearing, deranged rant against humanity with clapping in the background. "Ode To Camping" is the longest nine minutes and nine seconds of my life. That high feedback tone is brutal, and the toy piano-playing adds sinister depth. "A Life Of Nothing" sounds like death metal grumbling over a broken casio. "like dogshit on the grass...." "Liar Throne" features a steady drum beat somewhere back in the haze of its discontent. More black-metal vocals, plus the feedback and keyboards. It's certainly unpleasant, often brutally so. Aggressive, electronic noise comes in many forms.

SWERVE
interviewed by
Skot Schtickla

Swerve has been a part of the Sydney music scene, in particular the experimental music scene for as long as I've been around of it. I first met him in the mid nineties sometime as his label had organized gigs which they had asked my band at the time to be a part of and also I had witnessed insane shows that contained Swerve and other acts from his label Dual Plover that I'd never seen or heard anything like before! Generally challenging musically in many ways but also also visually spectacular and energetic unlike a lot of 'noise' shows which can be great to listen to but dull to look at. I noticed that never with Swerve or any of the associated acts you would get this, they always went off in some way and had fun.

When did you first become aware/ interested in sound in general and what do you remember of your earliest 'hearing 'experiences whether musical or not?
When I was in kindergarten we got out of class early because awas shot, one of my earliest memories, then in feb i remember running across the street yelling 'the beatles are on tv, the beatles are on tv', we made guitars out of boards and rubber bands in 1964 when i was 6 or 7, a great year, well, not for jfk i guess.

TRICKY QUESTION FIRST: CAN YOU TELL ME SOMETHING ABOUT THIS ALBUM THAT NO ONE ELSE KNOWS?
The sound, feel, instrumentation, vocals, and pretty much everything about the song "When Will The Drugs Take Effect?" is a homage to one of my favorite albums of all time; THE FLAMING LIPS' "The Soft Bulletin".

SO......DID YOU MISS AUTOreverse?
In fact I did. I don’t believe you’ve ever received your full due from running autoreverse during those crucial years after Option went south and Sound Choice folded. You and Bryan Baker of Gajoob were essential to keeping the spirit of home taping culture on the map and alive. Plus you are just a damn good writer.

DID YOU MISS AUTOreverse?
Yes, I missed "AUTOreverse" a lot. During the last five or six years of life, I felt very disconnected from the "cassette culture" that served as a musical and psychological lifeline for me when I was a lonely teenager in southeast Texas. "AUTOreverse" was the best of the 'zines I read to keep myself informed about cassette culture, and its support helped give me the strength I needed to keep making music when the people surrounding me weren't exactly supportive.
